Templates & routes
Give one post, page or URL the other layout, regardless of the setting.
How it works
Every layout setting picks a layout for the whole publication. Each layout is also a template, so one post, page or URL can have the other one.
Posts and pages
- Open the post or page in the editor.
- In the post or page settings menu, pick a layout under Template.
- Click Update.
The menu lists both layouts of posts, About, Membership, the Tags directory and the writers masthead: Post Title Page, About Split Hero, Tags Cover Cards and so on. Default follows the setting.
Recommendations has no per-layout templates. Ghost renders that list through a helper that passes nothing through from the page, so it always follows Directory layout.
Routes for everything else
The front page, the feed, a tag, a writer and the error page have no settings menu. Pick their layout with a route under Settings → Labs → Routes instead.
| Page | Templates |
|---|---|
| Front page | layout-home-magazine-cover, layout-home-editorial-masthead |
| Feed | layout-feed-list, layout-feed-grid |
| Tag archive | layout-tag-list, layout-tag-grid |
| Writer | layout-author-list, layout-author-grid |
| Error page | layout-error-centered-statement, layout-error-split-hero |
For example, this puts a grid of every post at /gallery/, and a grid of the essays tag at /essays-as-cards/:
routes: /gallery/: controller: channel template: layout-feed-grid /essays-as-cards/: controller: channel filter: tag:essays data: tag.essays template: layout-tag-gridThe same shape gives the feed a URL of its own. This keeps the front page at / and adds the feed, in the list layout, at /archive/:
routes: /archive/: controller: channel template: layout-feed-listA route always answers with status 200, so the two error-page templates tell search engines not to index them.
